Care Team

What is the Care Team?

The SU Care Team is an interdepartmental response team made of caring professionals who support the health, safety, and wellbeing of our students.  The SU Care Team is more than just the members of the team itself, it is a community effort that extends beyond this group to support and involve the SU community in this mission.

Mission: To provide outreach and/or interventions, connect students to resources, make referrals, and provide follow up and closure on each case through effective communication and collaboration.

Purpose: The purpose of the Care Team is to identify students of concern and address their individual needs while managing the health and safety of the university community as a whole.

Make a Referral

The SU Care Team referral form was created to help members of the Stevenson community refer a student who may be struggling with personal or emotional difficulties or who may be exhibiting concerning behavior. Examples of when to refer a student concern to the CARE Team are:

  • Sudden changes from regular behavior patterns (Sociability, talkativeness, eating, sleeping, partying, emotionality, capacity for work, substance abuse)
  • Deterioration of work
  • Disturbing content in academic work
  • Expressions of intense emotions (rage, anxiety, hopelessness, loneliness)
  • Deterioration in appearance or hygiene
  • Significant weight change
  • Self-disclosure of distress
  • Upsetting events (family problems, death of a loved one, end of a relationship)
  • Concern expressed by close friends

IF YOU ARE REPORTING AN IMMEDIATE CRISIS OR STUDENT SAFETY ISSUE, CALL 911 AND CAMPUS SECURITY AT 443-352-4500 (x4500 from an on campus phone).

FAQs

What happens after I submit a referral?

The Care Team will review your concern as soon as possible and typically within 24 hours of submission. As a general rule, a member of the Care Team or other appropriate staff member (e.g. a Residence Director, Student Success Coach, etc.) will be assigned as the primary point person to follow-up with the referred student. In more urgent cases, the Dean of Students (or designee) will reach out to the student as quickly as possible. If you are reporting an immediate crisis or student safety issue, do not rely on this referral form but instead call 911 and Campus Security at 443-352-4500.

The Care Team meets on a weekly basis throughout the fall and spring semesters (and during the summer as needed) to review concerns that have been submitted and to ensure appropriate follow-up with the student has happened and that the student continues to receive appropriate support as needed in the future.

What are examples of issues that are appropriate to be referred to the Care Team?

Examples of issues that would be appropriate for referral to the Care Team include the following:

  • Sudden changes from regular behavior patterns (Sociability, talkativeness, eating, sleeping, partying, emotionality, capacity for work, substance abuse)
  • Deterioration of work
  • Disturbing content in academic work
  • Expressions of intense emotions (rage, anxiety, hopelessness, loneliness)
  • Deterioration in appearance or hygiene
  • Significant weight change
  • Self-disclosure of distress
  • Upsetting events (family problems, death of a loved one, end of a relationship)
  • Concern expressed by close friends

Important: If a student appears to be an imminent risk of causing harm to self or others, do not rely on this referral form but instead call 911 and Campus Security at 443-352-4500 immediately.

I’m not sure if the Care Team is the appropriate group to address a particular issue?

If you are not sure, please submit the referral and allow us to make the determination. If the Care Team determines the issue would be best addressed by another campus resource, the Care Team will refer the matter on your behalf.

Will someone follow-up with me after I submit a referral?

To the extent possible, a member of the Care Team will follow-up with you to confirm receipt of your referral and otherwise close the loop. That said, we are committed to student privacy and therefore we may be limited in what we can share and, in certain cases, we will not be able to share details with you regarding our follow-up.

Suggestions for Intervening

The following are suggestions for talking with a student about whom you are concerned. Additional information regarding how to help may be found at created by the Wellness Center.

  • Talk to the student privately to help minimize embarrassment & defensiveness.
  • Listen carefully to the student and respond to both the content and emotion in the conversation.
  • Discuss your observations and perceptions of the situation frankly and honestly with the student.
  • Ask if the student is having any thoughts of harming self or others.
  • Respect the student’s value system even if you don’t agree with it.
  • Clarify the limits on your ability to help. Instead, offer the student information on the Wellness Center, the Dean of Students and the Office of Student Success.
  • Avoid making promises of complete confidentiality. (It is difficult to get others to help if you can’t tell them what is happening.) Instead, you might promise to only share the information others might “need to know” to do their jobs.
  • Acknowledge inappropriate or strange behavior without being judgmental.
