Faculty of the University

General Faculty

The General Faculty of 果冻传媒直播 are employees who hold academic rank and whose primary appointment is to serve students through teaching, guidance of experiential learning activities, academic advisement, and other forms of instruction.

General Faculty may be employed full-time or part-time.

The titles Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor*, Senior Lecturer, and Lecturer indicate full-time appointments.

The titles Adjunct Professor and Adjunct Instructor indicate part-time appointments.

General Faculty work and performance expectations are more explicitly defined in other sections of the 果冻传媒直播 Policy Manual.

General Faculty are eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council pursuant to the Faculty Council Constitution and Bylaws (see Governance Policies).

The typical contract length for full-time General Faculty is 9-months (August-May).

Faculty Directors

The Faculty Directors of 果冻传媒直播 are members of the General Faculty who also have additional responsibility for a specialized programmatic function. As such, Faculty Directors hold academic rank and are reported as faculty. The specialized programmatic function performed by a Faculty Director may or may not involve the supervision and/or performance evaluation of other faculty.

Faculty Directors who supervise and/or evaluate the performance of other faculty are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council pursuant to the Faculty Council Constitution and Bylaws. Faculty Directors who do not supervise or evaluate the performance of other faculty are eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council.

The typical contract length for Faculty Directors is 9-months, with course release as proposed by the Dean and approved by the EVPAA & Provost. Faculty Directors are eligible for promotion in faculty rank through the established process.

Where applicable, a summer stipend is provided in recognition of work that the Faculty Director is expected to perform during the summer months between the end of the spring and start of the subsequent fall semester.

Faculty Administrators

The Faculty Administrators are the Academic Program Administrators of 果冻传媒直播 and are members of the General Faculty who have administrative responsibilities including the oversight of academic programs and the supervision and evaluation of the performance of other faculty. Faculty Administrators hold titles including, but not limited to, Program Coordinator, Program Director, or Department Chair, and are reported as faculty but are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council pursuant to the Faculty Council Constitution and Bylaws.

Faculty Administrators receive faculty contracts with course release according to university standards. Faculty Administrators are eligible for promotion in faculty rank through the established process.

For Faculty Administrators with a 10-month contract, the 10th month of salary is awarded in recognition of work that the Faculty Administrator is expected to perform during the summer months between the end of the spring and start of the subsequent fall semester.

Faculty Librarians

Librarians with faculty status have earned the professional graduate training credential (M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. degree), which is considered the terminal degree in the practice of academic librarianship, from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program. Librarian Faculty are eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council pursuant to the Faculty Council Constitution and Bylaws (see Governance Policies).

Librarian Faculty are hired as 12-month professional staff and therefore do not receive faculty contracts.

Associate Deans

The Associate Deans of 果冻传媒直播 are employees who hold academic rank and whose primary appointment is to supervise and evaluate the performance of other faculty and/or to administer a specialized academic program or programs. The scope of an Associate Dean鈥檚 work typically spans more than one academic department or school.

In accordance with the University鈥檚 standards for faculty rank, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost awards initial rank to an Associate Dean at the time of employment or appointment into this role.

Associate Deans may be assigned teaching responsibilities as included in their position description and with the approval of the School Dean and EVPAA & Provost. Associate Deans are reported as staff, do not receive faculty contracts, and are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council nor for promotion in faculty rank.

Affiliate Faculty

Full-time Stevenson employees whose primary appointment is not instruction, but who possess the credentials and experience required for general faculty status, may be assigned as the instructor of record for a course provided they hold the title of Affiliate Faculty and have written permission from their supervisor to do so. Unless otherwise specified in the employee’s approved position description, Affiliate Faculty may not carry a teaching load more than the equivalent of one course per semester (3-4 credits), and they receive no additional compensation for teaching done as part of their position description. Affiliate Faculty seeking remuneration for their teaching above and beyond their base salary must provide justification and secure permissions as directed in the relevant form. Affiliate Faculty are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council.

Affiliate Faculty are full-time staff employees and therefore do not receive faculty contracts.

Visiting Faculty

When necessary, the University may hire an appropriately credentialed individual to serve as full-time instructional faculty for a period of one year or less. Visiting Faculty are appointed as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost after consultation with the applicable School Dean. Only in unusual circumstances shall a visiting appointment exceed a total of two years. Visiting faculty are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council.

Special鈥怉ppointment Faculty

The University may appoint artists, writers, scholars, and other distinguished individuals to the special-faculty status of Artist/Writer/Scholar-in-Residence. Such appointments are awarded for a specific period of time and may be full-time or part-time depending upon the needs of the University. They are appointed by the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost after consultation with the applicable School Dean. All such faculty are appointed for a limited period of time with no intent of ongoing employment. Special-Appointment Faculty are not eligible for voting membership in the Faculty Council.

Emeritus Faculty

Emeritus status is an honorary distinction conferred on a retired faculty member or academic administrator by the 果冻传媒直播 Board of Trustees upon the recommendation of the President. (See also Emeritus Faculty policy.)

University Administrators

A University administrator may hold faculty rank but shall not be considered General Faculty under the constitution of the Faculty Council. In accordance with the University鈥檚 standards for faculty rank, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost shall have the discretion to award initial rank to a University administrator at the time of employment. Administrators who are permitted by the President to move to full-time General Faculty status may retain their academic rank.

Academic Rank

In accordance with the University鈥檚 standards, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost awards initial ranking at the time of employment. Thereafter, eligible faculty may apply for advancement in rank through the formal promotion application process.

* The rank of Instructor will be phased out. Current full-time faculty with the rank of Instructor will be awarded the rank and position of Senior Lecturer with the issuance of the next contract for which they are eligible. The last year in which a faculty member may hold the rank of Instructor is 2021-2022.
