On Tuesday, April 23, students from The Mill Agency at 果冻传媒直播 presented their final vision for a Maryland Emancipation Day celebration to the non-profit organization Civic Works.

Maryland Emancipation Day marks November 1, 1864, the day Maryland鈥檚 newly adopted constitution ended slavery in the state. Since then, Emancipation Day events commemorating that day have been held around the state. In August 2023, Stevenson students presented Civic Works with the idea of holding a similar event in Baltimore City鈥攚hich, to their knowledge, had yet to hold its annual Emancipation Day celebration. Now, After nearly nine months of collaboration between the students and faculty of The Mill Agency and Civic Works, a celebration is slated to take place later this year at Baltimore鈥檚 historic Clifton Mansion.

鈥淚 am so proud of what the students and faculty of the Mill Agency have accomplished,鈥 said Meghan Marx, Associate Professor of Arts and Graphic Design at Stevenson. 鈥淪tudents in The Mill Agency designed and planned a full event for Civic Works that takes complex history, the non-profit鈥檚 mission, and the community into account. The Mill Agency is a great example to experience in a student-driven, client-focused interdisciplinary applied learning environment. The work done for Civic Works would not have been possible without Stevenson鈥檚 support of interdisciplinary collaboration and the generous support of PNC.鈥

Stevenson Communications and Design students鈥 final proposal included design assets, activity demonstrations, and logistics details to help Civic Works execute the event. The goal of the event is to highlight the historical and social significance of Emancipation Day in Maryland and its relevance today.

鈥淚t was amazing,鈥 said Natrina Lee, Venue Events Manager at Clifton Mansion for Civic Works. 鈥淓verything is beautiful, and I appreciate how I can see some of the things we suggested throughout the process. The focus and attention to detail is amazing.鈥

Part of Stevenson鈥檚 School of Design, Arts, and Communication, The Mill Agency is a student-run advertising, communications, and design agency. Their partnership with Civic Works was made possible through support from PNC and has provided Stevenson students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while creating solutions to real-world problems.

Junior Stevenson Nursing student Moriah Sauls spent her Spring Break providing medical care in the Dominican Republic as part of the Salud Primero Reading-Samana Medical Mission Trip.

鈥淧articipating in a medical mission in an underdeveloped area like Samana was truly inspiring,鈥 said Moriah. 鈥淧roviding healthcare services and patient education to communities lacking access to basic medical care was the driving force behind my decision to join this mission. Being able to contribute to educating individuals on diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and basic infections, and witnessing the potential impact it has on their lives, was immensely rewarding.鈥

As part of the trip, Moriah traveled to different parts of the country and helped the team provide the communities of La Pascuala, Las Terrenas, Sanchez, and Samana with vital healthcare services.

鈥淲orking alongside a dedicated medical team, including family medicine doctors, a pediatrician, and University of Maryland dental residents, I was able to gain valuable learning opportunities,鈥 said Moriah. 鈥淚 gained a deeper understanding of the holistic approach to healthcare and the importance of personalized patient care. From conducting basic assessments and vital signs to administering medications, I could apply the knowledge and skills acquired during my studies at 果冻传媒直播. The seamless integration of theory into practice was truly fulfilling and has undoubtedly enriched my journey as a nursing student.鈥

Two Stevenson Fashion Design majors鈥攋unior Richard Carranza and senior Emily Pickett鈥攈ave received the Stevenson Student Scholarly and Creative Works Summer Grants. The grants will allow the two students to continue to work on their projects this summer under the mentorship of Professor Leslie Simpson and Min Cheung, Artist-in-Residence in Fashion Design.

鈥淏oth fashion design students want to develop textiles and garments with a focus on sustainability,鈥 said Professor Simpson. 鈥淭hey want to bring awareness to the fashion industry and consumers that there are eco-friendly alternatives in apparel.鈥

A New Line of Bamboo Fiber T-Shirts

Richard Carranza鈥檚 goal is to produce a line of originally designed, T-shirts made of 100% bamboo fiber. The grant will enable him to buy fabric, construct the T-shirts, take photos for a marketing campaign, and host a pop-up event to release his shirts.

鈥淲hen I got the email, it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders at first, and then came the excitement of envisioning the process and outcome possibilities of my project,鈥 Richard said. 鈥淭he grant will give me the opportunity to work with a local manufacturer to produce these shirts after developing the sample myself. We will be producing about 100 of these, which is the most garments I will ever have had produced in one release. My products are usually very limited so this will help me make the release more available to a wider audience.鈥

Richard鈥檚 line of T-shirts will be made from a natural bamboo jersey knit fabric. Bamboo is abundant, fast-growing, and uses requires less water, fertilizer, and pesticides than other commonly-used fabrics, which makes it a more sustainable option.

Richard has entrepreneurial aspirations. After graduating, he plans to establish a design studio and community maker’s space in the Baltimore area focused on slow fashion using sustainable methods.

鈥淚 hope to use my degree to get a corporate job designing and developing clothing and similar products. I also plan to rent a studio so I can form a team and work on my own design house and projects.鈥

Developing a Sustainable New Material

Emily Pickett is a senior Fashion Design major with a minor in Fashion Merchandising. Her goal is to continue to explore and refine the development of a sustainable biomaterial fabric made from a bacterial mat known as a SCOBY that鈥檚 also a byproduct of kombucha production. She plans to use this material鈥斺淪COBY leather鈥濃攖o create a wearable garment and accessory.

鈥淲hen I learned I got the grant I was really excited,鈥 Emily said. 鈥淚 was already experimenting with SCOBY leather on my own time and had applied as a shot in the dark. Vegan leather is traditionally made from polyurethane or plastic which are arguably worse for the environment than regular leather. Since SCOBY is a regenerative and biodegradable material, and uses less water and other resources, it鈥檚 a more sustainable material.鈥

The grant will enable Emily to buy new materials and equipment, and use lab space to develop the textile. She plans to document the entire process, present samples of the leather, accessory and garments on campus to faculty and students and submit the project at a design competition in 2025.

鈥淔ashion is one of the most polluting industries,鈥 Emily said. 鈥淒r. Simpson has a real passion for sustainability, I鈥檓 excited to continue this project and work alongside her this summer.鈥 For more news from Stevenson鈥檚 Fashion Design program, follow the program on and . Jai Raccioppi, a senior in 果冻传媒直播鈥檚 Biomedical Engineering program, was recently accepted to the Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. program at the University of Florida.

鈥淛ai is a great example of what we expect from all of the students in Stevenson鈥檚 Biomedical Engineering program,鈥 said Neil Rothman, Biomedical Engineering Professor and Program Coordinator. 鈥淗e excels academically, is a curious researcher, and is motivated to pursue experiences that enhance his education and prepare him for a successful career. It has been a pleasure having him in our program and we expect great things from him as he pursues his Ph.D.and beyond.鈥

At the University of Florida, Jai will be conducting research in the Tissue Mechanics, Microstructure, and Modeling Laboratory (TM3) under Dr. Lakiesha Williams, as well as working in collaboration with the neurosurgeons at Shands Hospital for pre-clinical studies. His first topic of research will examine how neurofibrillary tangles spread throughout the brain, and the effects of traumatic brain injury on this process.

鈥淏efore my grandfather passed away, he received treatment and imaging for potential neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer鈥檚 at Shands Hospital,鈥 Jai said. 鈥淚n that same building, I hope to advance the knowledge on how these neurodegenerative disorders develop and discover a new measure to prevent them. I have spent all four years as a Stevenson student athlete heavily involved with many extra curriculars to perfect my time management skill. Stevenson has prepared me perfectly for this next step.鈥
